Instructions
Prepare the bread:
Spread mayonnaise over one side of each slice of bread.
Add the tomato:
Layer thick tomato slices over one piece of bread and season generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Finish the sandwich:
Add fresh basil leaves, if using, and top with the second slice of bread.
Serve:
Slice and enjoy immediately.
Notes
Tomatoes:
Use ripe, room-temperature tomatoes for the best flavor. Heirloom tomatoes are especially delicious when in season.
Bread:
Sourdough is pictured, but soft sandwich bread, homemade whole wheat bread, or your favorite market loaf all work beautifully.
Basil:
Completely optional. A classic tomato sandwich needs nothing more than tomato, bread, mayonnaise, salt, and pepper.
Serving:
Assemble just before eating so the bread stays at its best.
