Stephanie’s Food Background

I began cooking at a young age, learning and perfecting skills taught by an indulgent mother and grandmother, both tremendous home chefs. They let me explore and experiment with flavors, textures, and ingredients before I reached 10.

Through those experiences, cooking became an integral part of my life, which eventually expanded to more than 15 years of catering large events, event planning for universities and nonprofit organizations, publishing my own cookbooks and compiling George Fox University centennial cookbook, and always finding time for afternoon tea gatherings.

And while food and media have been an integral part of my professional background, family meals have been the cornerstone of our lives. We gather, cook, share food, host, and entertain often. Weekly meals are planned and always healthy, with a few treats to brighten the days. With a certification in Cooking for Busy Healthy People from Standard University, I often cook meals in the Mediterranean style, with a few healthier comfort foods thrown in for good measure.

Additional Professional Background

In addition to more than 20 years of experience in culinary and event planning, I’ve also been blessed to work extensively in the media as a television news writer and producer, some of which won national awards and published books.

I have worked in television and radio, producing nationally syndicated television programs for CBS and other affiliates, a television series on teenage suicide, which won a national Angel Award for excellence in the media, written news copy, and produced news for a local CBS affiliate.

Personal Life

I was born in Seattle, Washington, but spent my early years with my family of five in Washington State, Oregon, and Southern California. As the oldest child, I enjoyed “helping” my younger siblings in all things (I’m smiling because “helping” may not be the word they use– I took my job very seriously).

After graduating from Seattle Pacific University with two degrees in communications and history and graduate classes at Portland State University and Duke University, I began my working life and, shortly after, married my sweetheart, Rick.

We have raised our son in the Puget Sound area and love living life to the fullest, from years of traveling for basketball and cooking for lots of really large teenage and college basketball boys to visiting with friends and family living all over the world.

When Did 31Daily Begin?

This website was a natural extension of my love and experience in cooking. While I had been writing online for more than five years, I published the first 31Daily blog post in May 2016. I wanted to create a space dedicated to delicious food, beautiful living, and tea.

The inspiration came in the middle of the night during an unusual Seattle warm spell when the spring flowers bloomed, and early crickets were making music. And summer outdoor parties were on my mind.

And the next morning, it all began.

Here, you will find the fresh, delicious recipes I love making and eating at home. From healthy to healthy-ish, from sweet treats to quick and easy recipes… to simple weeknight dinner meal plans.

Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea is a favorite respite in the middle of the day. Whether at home or in a favorite tea room, here you will find plenty of inspiration and pro tips for easily hosting your afternoon tea. You can also find simple-to-make recipes for finger sandwichessavory dishessweets, and scones.
