The Sunday Journal: The May Table
April 26, 2026
There is a distinct shift that happens in late April. The light lingers a little longer, the gardens begin their slow, beautiful unfurling, and the season starts to feel less like a promise and more like an arrival. In my garden, the greens-arugula, spinach, and romaine-are already becoming meals, while the herbs are growing with happy abandon. After months of cozy braises and hearth-side tea, our attention naturally drifts toward the windows-and eventually, the patio.
The May Table is not just about what we eat. It is about a mood, a season, and the gentle way spring invites us back outdoors. It is the bridge between structured routines and something a little looser, lighter, and lovelier: baby greens, vibrant color, open windows, and the heady scent of the garden just beyond the door.
This week, as we begin looking ahead to the celebrations of May and the sweetness of Mother's Day, I find myself wanting to make room for all of it-linen on the table, lilacs in a vase, and the bright flavors of a new season.
Welcome to the Edit. Let's set the table together.
Happy Sunday.

At the Table: Spring Ideas for the Week Ahead
If there is one recipe that feels especially at home this week, it is the new Healthy Strawberry Yogurt Bread. It has everything I love about spring baking: seasonal fruit, a tender crumb, and the kind of simple sweetness that feels just right with tea or coffee on a slow morning.
On the menu:
- Something fresh and new: This Healthy Strawberry Yogurt Bread is a lovely little seasonal bake-bright, tender, and perfect for breakfast, an afternoon treat, or a simple spring gathering.
- For easy spring dinners: This is the time of year when I start craving meals that feel lighter but still comforting. Our recent easy spring dinners are full of that balance.
- A quick weeknight favorite: Chicken Muffaletta is such a fun twist for the season-bold flavor, easy prep, and perfect for nights when dinner needs to come together quickly.
- Looking gently ahead: If Mother's Day is already on your mind, and with our refreshed Mother's Day Afternoon Tea post publishing tomorrow, this feels like the perfect week to begin thinking about simple finger sandwiches, something sweet, and a table brightened with flowers and spring light.
There's something I always love about this stretch of the season. The food begins to look brighter, the meals feel a little easier, and even a simple loaf cake or weeknight supper can feel like a small celebration.

Strawberry Rhubarb Cake
With its sweet-tart fruit and tender buttery crumb, this simple spring cake feels right at home on The May Table-easy enough for an everyday bake, yet pretty enough for brunch, dessert, or afternoon tea.
READER REVIEW: ★★★★★
"I love this recipe, and it will be my go-to for rhubarb cake from now on."

At the Market Table
One of the loveliest parts of this season is the return of the market table-If you're cooking with May in mind, here are a few places to begin:
- Asparagus - roast it, tuck it into pasta, or serve it simply with lemon
- Spring onions - mild, sweet, and perfect for grilling or sautéing
- Baby greens - ideal for quick lunches and easy spring salads
- Fresh herbs - mint, parsley, dill, and chives for spring
- Rhubarb - one of the season's signature ingredients for cakes, crisps, and pies
- Strawberries - bright, sweet, and right at home in simple bakes
The Gathering: Setting the Table for May
One of the loveliest things about early May is that gathering begins to feel almost effortless.
You don't need a holiday or a full event plan. Often, it begins with a mood.
A vase of lilacs on the table.
A linen napkin instead of paper.
A loaf cake on the counter.
The back door open to the garden.
A simple lunch or teatime tray shared in the afternoon light.
That, to me, is the heart of The May Table.
If you want to carry this feeling into the weeks ahead, here are a few easy ways to begin:
- Let the flowers lead.
A few stems from the garden or market can set the whole tone of the table. - Choose one beautiful, easy recipe.
A quick bread, tea cake, or simple brunch dish is often all you need. - Keep it light and seasonal.
Baby greens, fresh herbs, berries, lemons, and spring vegetables do so much of the work for you. - Think ahead, but softly.
This is a lovely week to begin gathering ideas for Mother's Day without rushing into it.
Spring entertaining can be so simple when we let the season itself be the centerpiece.
A Few Favorites
Note from Stephanie
I always think this last Sunday of April feels like a quiet threshold.
Not quite the fullness of May, and not the early promise of spring anymore either-but something beautifully in between. A season beginning to settle in. A table beginning to move outdoors. A kitchen beginning to fill with herbs, greens, berries, and lighter meals.
As you move into the week ahead, I hope there's a moment for something lovely and seasonal-something shared, something simple, something that reminds you how beautiful this time of year can be.
Wishing you a restful Sunday morning.
Stephanie

Happy early birthday, Jennifer! I'm hoping May bring sun and warmth to Maryland too. I've been hoping the same for Seattle, and today, the sun is shining. It's still cool, but the sun is glorious. Hope you enjoy the strawberry bread, and have a wonderful week.
