What to Love About a Blueberry Mug Cake
- Easy to make for 1 or 2… or even more.
- Quick and easy with a handful of simple ingredients.
- Texture is soft and warm and the flavor is utterly delicious.
What Size Mug Do I Need for this Mug Cake?
You will need a 12 to 14-ounce microwavable mug. A 16-ounce mug works fine too with a bit more room at the top for, say, vanilla ice cream that melts into the cake, leaving one in absolute bliss. Sorry — that might just be me! You can add whatever topping your heart desires — or leave it simple with nothing extra.
How to Make the Best Microwave Mug Cake
The most important tip for a successful mug cake is mixing the ingredients really, really well. While it’s super easy to mix the ingredients in the mug, sometimes it doesn’t get thoroughly combined.
I like to recommend mixing the ingredients with a whisk or fork in a separate bowl so that you can be sure that ingredients are fully incorporated.
Should You Add an Egg to Mug Cakes?
This Blueberry Mug Cake does not contain any eggs. I find that an egg overwhelms the flavor of mug cakes and I’m not a fan of the texture it creates.
Baking powder, on the other hand, I think gives them a perfect texture. In fact Epicurious concurs when they write: “a pinch of baking powder is enough to help the batter rise up the sides of the mug.”
How Long Do You Microwave a Mug Cake?
As you know, microwaves vary, even those with similar wattages. Even different mugs may need different times. This Blueberry Mug Cake is perfectly cooked in my 1000 watt microwave in 75 seconds but may take as long as 90 seconds.
I recommend checking the cake at 1 minute and adding time in 5-second intervals. You want the top to be “just” set and not overbaked for the best and softest texture. Be sure to let it cool a couple of minutes too.

2 Minute Blueberry Mug Cake
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 to 2 tbsp granulated sugar or to taste
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- pinch of salt
- 3 tablespoons milk dairy or non-dairy
- 1 and 1/2 tbsp butter melted
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- small handful of fresh blueberries
Instructions
- You will need a microwave-safe mug that is 12 to 14 ounces.
- Add the butter to the mug and microwave for a few seconds until melted, then transfer the butter to a separate small bowl. Then add the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and milk; whisk until thoroughly combined and very smooth.
- Pour the batter into the mug and sprinkle a handful of fresh blueberries over the top. Add Crumb Topping if using. (I don't always do this because it's an extra step 🙂 ).
- Microwave for 60 to 90 seconds, the center of the cake should be just set. In my microwave (1100 watts) it takes about 75 seconds. But all microwaves are different. I recommend cooking for 1 minute and then testing the cake.
- Remove the mug from the microwave and let cool for a few minutes. Add any topping you may enjoy!

can I just stir it all up in the mug instead of using a separate bowl?
Hi Constance— yes, you can mix it in the mig, just be sure to mix it well.
Hi,
Do I microwave the crumble topping together with the 2 min. blueberry mug cake or separately
Hi Dagny! You do microwave the crumble topping along with the mug cake. If you look at the last photo, which is a top-down view of 2 mug cakes, the top mug cake is the one made with the crumble topping. Hope this helps!
