Is This the Same as Greek Tzatziki?

This dill yogurt sauce is very similar to tzatziki, but there is one key difference: the cucumber.

Traditional Greek tzatziki includes grated cucumber, while this sauce keeps things extra quick and simple with Greek yogurt, dill, garlic, and lemon. If you have a cucumber on hand and want to add it, you absolutely can - and then you've made a delicious tzatziki sauce.

I love both, but this cucumber-free Greek yogurt sauce is the one I make when I need something fast for Mediterranean bowls, roasted vegetables, chicken, seafood, pita, or a quick crudités platter.

It's also delicious with Greek-inspired dinners like Greek Stifado, falafel, Chicken Souvlaki, and Chicken Shawarma Bowls.

Dill Yogurt Sauce Ingredients

The exact measurements are in the recipe card below, but here's what you'll need to make this quick dill yogurt sauce.

Ingredients for Greek Dill Yogurt Dip on a round wood board
  • Plain Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt gives this sauce its thick, creamy texture. I prefer full-fat Greek yogurt for the richest flavor, but low-fat Greek yogurt also works. You can also substitute an unsweetened plain dairy-free yogurt if needed.
  • Garlic: Fresh garlic gives the sauce its classic savory flavor. Pressing the garlic is quickest, but finely minced garlic works too.
  • Fresh Dill: Fresh dill brings bright, herby flavor and makes this sauce especially delicious with Mediterranean recipes, vegetables, fish, chicken, and snacks.
  • Fresh Lemon Juice: A squeeze of fresh lemon juice brightens the yogurt and balances the garlic and dill.

How to Make Yogurt Sauce

Making this sauce could not be simpler.

Add the Greek yogurt, garlic, fresh dill, and lemon juice to a bowl. Stir until smooth and combined. Taste and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper as needed.

That's it - a creamy, lemony Greek yogurt dill sauce in about 2 minutes.

Optional Variations

This sauce is delicious as written, but here are a few easy ways to make it your own:

  • Add a drizzle of olive oil over the top before serving for extra richness.
  • Stir in a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes for gentle heat.
  • Add finely grated cucumber to make it more like traditional tzatziki.
  • Thin with a splash of water or lemon juice if you want more of a drizzle than a dip.

What to Serve Greek Dill Yogurt With

I love this sauce with Mediterranean Sheet Pan Greek Chicken, Chicken Shawarma Bowls, grilled chicken, seafood, roasted vegetables, and warm pita.

It's also delicious spooned over roasted asparagus, drizzled on grain bowls, served with carrots and cucumbers, or added to a simple crudités platter.

A few favorite ways to use it:

  • As a dip for fresh vegetables or pita wedges
  • As a sauce for chicken, salmon, shrimp, or lamb
  • As a drizzle for Mediterranean bowls
  • As a spread for wraps and sandwiches
  • As a cooling sauce for grilled vegetables

Storage Tips

Store leftover Greek yogurt dill sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. Stir before serving, as the sauce may loosen slightly as it sits.

For the freshest flavor, add a little extra lemon juice or fresh dill just before serving.

  1. Taste and adjust ingredients as you make, don't mix it all and then adjust 😆 I ended up using 1 cup of yogurt to balance out the other ingredients.

  2. Hi Stephanie, I loved the sound of this sauce but didn’t have fresh dill so rather than use the dried, I used minced green onion tops and whites, and it turned out quite good. Because the green onion is quite mild, I added a half tsp of onion powder and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes. My guests loved it! I will make it again when I can get fresh dill. Thanks.

    1. Hi Barbara! Thank you so much for sharing your adaptations for the recipe when you don’t have fresh dill. Such smart ingredient choices!! So glad you liked it.
