As the summer garden produces a bumper crop of flavorful fruits and vegetables, here are some easy and delicious ways to add seasonal bounty to a family favorite food.

With a teenager in the house, I’m always thinking about weekend food, fright night food… well, actually, the demand for food is quite high with him. Teens and food just go together. And when I think of teens-and-food — naturally, my mind wanders to pizza.

But what I had in mind was something just a little more tantalizing than your standard cheese or pepperoni pizza.

Something easy — and healthier. Something to make at home.

Test drive some of these pizzas… easy, filled with seasonal goodness, and certainly delicious!

1. ZUCCHINI PIZZA RECIPE

“Half moons of salted zucchini are cooked atop a white pizza along with raw garlic, goat cheese and thin slices of fresh lemon. The pizza is then finished with a scattering of chopped chives. A riot of green and yellow, this Zucchini Pizza is light, bright and packed with flavor.”

2. Suncrest Gardens Farm’s Pesto Pizza

Heather Secrist uses kale in her pesto for this tomatoey creation, though you can substitute arugula, spinach or basil if you prefer. “Pesto can be frozen in ice cube trays for use throughout the year,” says Heather, owner of Suncrest Gardens Farm in Cochrane, Wisconsin. “Once frozen, place the cubes in a freezer bag to pull out as you need them.”

10. Cracker-Style Thin Crust Pizza!

“It’s crackly, flaky, crisp but with a little bit of give, and it takes up so much less belly real estate than doughy chewy regular crust that you can eat, like, seven more slices. Which is clearly the most important part.”
