Choosing the Best Asparagus

When it’s asparagus season, the markets are brimming with bright green stalks. Choosing the best available is easy with these 3 tips:

  • Choose heads of asparagus that are tight and firm.
  • Look for bright green stalks that fade into white at the end.
  • Choose asparagus spears that are sitting in water, it helps keep them fresh longer.

How to Trim Asparagus

The ends of the asparagus stalks tend to be woody and tough. You don’t want to eat those ends!

To find out where the stalk becomes tough, bend an asparagus spear by holding on the bottom, and where it naturally snaps is where you want to trim the ends. This helps separate the tender stalk from the woody bottoms.

Line up the asparagus on a cutting board and trim at the same spot across the bunch.
