It’s tender, utterly delicious especially when warm from the oven, and rather perfect with a cup of tea.

Banana Bread Recipes

Looking through our recipe archives the other day, I realized we have quite a few variations of banana bread.

From traditional banana bread to a decadent Double Chocolate Espresso Banana Bread.

But we also have plenty of twists like Chocolate Chip Banana Bread, Blueberry Banana Bread (I love this recipe), and similar to this one, a Greek Yogurt Banana Bread made with all-purpose flour. We also have a fall-flavored Maple Apple Banana Bread.

This Whole Wheat Banana Oat Bread recipe, though, is one I find myself making often for teatime, afternoon snacks, and healthier treats.

How to Make Whole Wheat Banana Oat Bread

This is such a simple recipe to make. Here is a summary of how to make this banana bread.

Step 1: Preparation

Begin by preheating the oven to 350 degrees and coat a 9-inch by 5-inch loaf pan with nonstick spray.

Step 2: Combine Ingredients

Then, combine the mashed banana, Greek yogurt, applesauce, oil, and brown sugar in a large bowl or stand mixer. Then mix in the vanilla and eggs.

Once the wet ingredients are incorporated, add the dry ingredients of whole wheat flour, oats, salt, baking soda, baking powder, and cinnamon. To keep the banana bread light; mix until just combined and then transfer the batter into the loaf pan.

Step 3: Bake

Bake for 50-50 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean.

Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 50 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour
Servings: 16 servings

Ingredients

  • 3-4 bananas mashed (2 cups)
  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup oats old fashioned or quick cook
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350℉ and grease an 8.5-inch loaf pan or a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan and set aside.
  • Combine the mashed banana, Greek yogurt, applesauce, oil, and brown sugar in a large bowl or stand mixer. Then mix in the vanilla and eggs.
  • Add flour, oats, salt, baking soda, baking powder, and cinnamon; mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter, which makes the bread more dense. I like to mix only until there are no streaks of flour remaining. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  • Bake for 50 to 55 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean. Allow the bread to cool completely before removing from the pan and slicing. Store in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

    1. Hi Anna! Thank you so much for catching that. You add the oil with the other wet ingredients of mashed banana, Greek yogurt, applesauce, and brown sugar. I’ve updated the instructions.
