How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions and Eat Better

WebMD asks the question, “Do you resolve each year to do your body some good?” I would imagine most of us would raise our hand on that one. It’s the beauty of a new year, a fresh start with healthy resolutions.

If that’s you, here are a few of their tips on how making small changes can result in better eating which can reap big rewards:

  • Don’t skip breakfast: skipping this meal gives you the munchies later and slows metabolism.
  • Don’t skip any meals: Try not to let 5 hours elapse between meals which zaps energy and can lead to overeating later in the day.
  • Exercise for 30 minutes daily: Try to get 30 minutes of activity every day. It doesn’t have to be all at once.
  • Drink more water: Eliminating sugar-rich drinks, like fruit juice, sodas, and sweetened tea keeps you hydrated and healthy.
  • Aim for 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
  • Make healthy snacks ahead like pretzels, fruit, and yogurt.
  • Add fiber and healthy grains to salads: sprinkle rolled oats or whole grain cereal over healthy greens.
  • Combine pasta with lean protein and vegetables: this helps reduce the amount of pasta you consume.

Popular Healthy Dinners to Begin a New Year Menu

It’s Week 1 menu of 2023. It’s hard to imagine that we’re beginning a whole new year full of healthy possibilities. I’m excited and I hope you are too!

Because Monday is the “official” New Year’s Day holiday, we’re extending a celebratory mood into this week menu with dinners that also happen to be some of the most popular healthy recipes on the web.

Monday’s dinner is a classic favorite I’m already looking forward to. It’s simple and easy. You might want to consider serving rotisserie chicken over the weekend, reserving some leftovers for this popular soup recipe.

Tuesday’s dinner is a 31Daily favorite healthy Mexican-inspired casserole recipe adapted from the New American Diet. Serve with your favorite fresh condiments like avocados, tomatoes, and greens.

In that it’s winter, I love to include slow cooker recipes when possible. This is a reader favorite recipe and a delicious meal you’ll love. Serve over pasta or even a favorite grain for a hearty winter dinner.

On Thursday, we’re making seafood, as we almost always do on this weekly dinner menu. My mouth is watering for this simple but stunning fish stew.

Friday’s dinner is a little bit fancy, it’s a whole lot delicious, and also happens to be a reader favorite!

The treat this week is not sugary or traditionally “desserty“– if I can make up that word. But it is delicious, healthy, and perfect for snacking throughout the week.

Happy New Year! See you next week.
