If one thing will get my family to the table, it's the promise of fresh guacamole. Whether it's Taco Tuesday, Cinco de Mayo, game day, or a quick snack before dinner, this is the easy guacamole recipe I come back to again and again.

Serve it with tortilla chips, pita chips, cut vegetables, or spooned over tacos, taco salads, burrito bowls, and enchiladas.

What I Love About This Guacamole Recipe

This guacamole is quick, flexible, and full of fresh flavor. I love that it can be made smooth or chunky, depending on how you like it, and the seasonings give it just enough warmth without overpowering the avocado.

It's also easy to adjust. Add extra jalapeño for heat, fold in diced tomato for texture, or keep it simple with just avocado, lime, salt, and a few seasonings.

Homemade Guacamole Ingredients

Here's what you need to make this simple avocado dip:

A bowl of fresh guacamole with a tortilla chip, surrounded by avocado halves, cherry tomatoes, lime wedges, cilantro, and extra tortilla chips.
  • Avocados: Use ripe avocados that give slightly when gently pressed.
  • Lime juice: Adds bright flavor and helps keep the guacamole fresh.
  • Seasonings: Salt, pepper, ground cumin, and a pinch of cayenne pepper add warmth and flavor.
  • Fresh add-ins: Finely chopped onion, shallot, or green onion; minced jalapeño; garlic; and fresh cilantro.

The add-ins are flexible. They bring wonderful flavor and texture, but when you're short on time, you can keep this guacamole very simple and still delicious.

How to Make Homemade Guacamole

This easy guacamole comes together in about 5 minutes.

  1. Cut the avocados in half lengthwise, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a bowl.
  2. Add lime juice, salt, cumin, and cayenne, if using. Mash with a fork, potato masher, or pastry cutter until the guacamole is partly smooth and partly chunky.
  3. Fold in the onion, garlic, jalapeño, and cilantro. Taste and adjust salt or lime juice as needed.
  4. Serve immediately with tortilla chips, pita chips, cut vegetables, tacos, or bowls.

Recipe FAQs

How do you keep guacamole from turning brown?

Press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole, removing as much air as possible, and refrigerate until ready to serve. A little extra lime juice on top can also help.

Can I make guacamole ahead?

Guacamole is best served fresh, but you can make it a few hours ahead. Store it tightly covered in the refrigerator with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface.

Prep: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 6 servings

Ingredients

  • 3 large Hass avocados
  • 1 lime juiced (1-½ tablespoons)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ¼-1/2 teaspoon cayenne optional for heat
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion my favorite is sweet yellow, but white, red, or even scallions work too
  • 2 teaspoons jalapeño seeded and minced, optional
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon cilantro chopped

Instructions

  • Cut the avocados in half lengthwise. Remove the pit, remove the avocado from the skin, and place into a bowl.
  • Add the lime juice, salt, cumin, and cayenne (if using) and mash with a potato masher, fork, or pastry cutter until half chunky, half smooth, and creamy. Fold in the onions, garlic, and fresh cilantro.
  • Serve with tortilla chips, pita chips, or cut veggies.

Notes

  1. Avocados: Ripe avocados are easiest to mash, but if they're still a bit firm, use a pastry cutter. It makes the job much easier and helps create a creamy, slightly chunky texture.
  2. Storing Guacamole: If you need to refrigerate guacamole, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to limit air exposure. I've also found that placing half an onion on top before covering helps preserve its color surprisingly well.
