Recipe Overview

A buttery brown-sugar toffee poured over graham crackers, topped with melted chocolate, and finished with nuts or festive sprinkles. Chill until firm, break into pieces, and enjoy all season long.

What I Love About This Recipe

What I love most about this Christmas Crack is how incredibly simple it is-yet how completely irresistible. A few basic ingredients transform into crisp, buttery toffee with a glossy layer of melted chocolate in the oven. It tastes like homemade candy, but without the precision or equipment.

I also love how adaptable it is. Some years, I swirl in white chocolate; other times, I sprinkle crushed peppermint or chopped pecans. It's the perfect addition to cookie boxes and holiday gifting-nestled alongside treats like my Sugar Cookie Cutouts or rich Dark Chocolate Pecan Espresso Brownies.

And because it keeps so well, it's a dream for make-ahead holiday baking. Once it's set and broken into pieces, it's ready for tins, platters, or a little late-night nibbling by the tree.

Christmas crack is one of my favorite 5 minute, quick and easy recipes to make during the holidays. Everyone loves this simple but flavorful mix.

Summary

Toffee Crack Ingredients

I mentioned that this recipe uses only 5 pantry ingredients plus salt. And they are ingredients you likely also already have on hand. Here is what you'll need (exact measurements are in the recipe card below).

Ingredients for Chocolate Toffee Crack Recipe on a round wood board
  • Graham crackers - A sturdy, lightly sweet base. Saltines also work for a more classic salty-sweet version.
  • Butter - Essential for creating that smooth, rich toffee layer.
  • Brown sugar - Caramelizes beautifully, giving the toffee its deep, buttery flavor.
  • Pinch of salt - Balances the sweetness.
  • Chocolate chips - Semi-sweet is classic, but dark, milk, or white chocolate all work.
  • Toppings - Chopped nuts, crushed peppermint, toffee bits, sprinkles, or anything festive.

How to Make Chocolate Toffee Crack

Here is how simple it is to make this toffee crack. Step-by-step instructions are in the recipe card below but here is a brief overview.

Begin by preheating the oven to 375°F and lining a baking sheet with foil. I use a half-sheet size.

Graham cracker sheets laying on foil lined baking sheet.
  1. Step 1: Add graham crackers to prepared baking sheet. It's easy to fit 15 full sheets on a half-sheet size baking pan. I like to use one more, cut in half lengthwise, to help fill in the very end of the sheet.

  1. Step 2: In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter and then whisk in the brown sugar and a pinch of salt until smooth. Pour over the graham crackers and spread evenly.

  1. Step 3: Bake the toffee for 10 minutes or until bubbling. Remove from the oven, scatter the chocolate over the hot toffee and return to the oven for 1 minute to soften the chocolate.

  1. Step 4: Remove from the oven and spread the now melted chocolate evenly over the crackers. Sprinkle nuts on top and set on the counter or chill for a few minutes to harden. Once set, break into pieces.

Variations

  • Dark chocolate: Use only dark chocolate for a rich, grown-up version.
  • Saltine crack: Swap graham crackers for saltines for a saltier, classic flavor.
  • Peppermint crunch: Add crushed candy canes and drizzle with melted white chocolate.
  • Nut-free: Use sprinkles, pretzels, or toffee bits instead.

Serving Ideas

  • Perfect for cookie boxes or tins with German Lebkuchen or Black Plum Crumb Bars.
  • Wrap in cellophane bags for neighbor or teacher gifts.
  • Serve alongside cocoa, tea, or coffee for a quick holiday treat.

Recipe FAQ's

Can I use saltines instead of graham crackers in this crack recipe?

Yes. Saltines give a slightly saltier, more traditional flavor and make a great base, graham crackers give the crack more depth of flavor.

Do I need a candy thermometer to make this crack?

No. This recipe uses a simple butter-brown sugar mixture that only needs to simmer until bubbly.

How long does Christmas Crack keep?

It keeps well for several days at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Store in an airtight container.

Can I freeze Chocolate Crack?

Yes. Freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator or at room temperature.

Why is my toffee grainy or separated?

This can happen if the butter and sugar don't fully blend before pouring. Simmer until smooth and bubbling.

Can I make this crack nut-free?

Absolutely. Use sprinkles, pretzels, or crushed candy canes instead of nuts.

Prep: 9 minutes
Cook: 11 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 36 servings

Ingredients

  • 16 whole graham cracker sheets
  • ¾ cup butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar packed
  • Pinch salt
  • ½ cup white chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chocolate chips semi-sweet, dark, or milk chocolate
  • 1 cup nuts chopped and salted (walnuts, pecans, or nut of choice)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a large baking sheet (I used a half sheet) with foil and set aside.
  • Place graham crackers in a single layer on the baking sheet. It will hold 15 whole graham rectangles and I break the 16th one in half and add to the end.
  • In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Then add brown sugar and a pinch of salt, and whisk until smooth.
  • Pour the toffee mixture over the graham crackers and spread evenly. I like to use an offset metal spatula, but a knife or the back of a spoon works well too. Bake for 10 minutes, or until bubbling.
  • Remove from the oven. Scatter both the white chocolate and the chocolate chips over the top of the hot toffee. Return to the oven for 1 more minute to soften the chocolate. Remove from the oven and using a spatula, swirl the chocolate together and spread over the graham crackers. Sprinkle chopped nuts over the top.
  • Let the toffee sit on the counter until it hardens and cools. Once slightly cool, I like to refrigerate the pan to speed up the process. Once cool and set, break the toffee into pieces.

  3. Toffee: Let the toffee bubble gently for 2-3 minutes to ensure it sets properly.
  4. Toppings: Add holiday flair with crushed peppermint, sprinkles, or a swirl of white chocolate.
