Father’s Day History

The first Father’s Day celebration occurred near my neck of the woods, at a YMCA in Spokane, WA. The idea was born at church, as many good things are.

It’s said that after listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day, Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired to honor her father, a war veteran who had raised 6 children on his own after his wife died in childbirth.

The YMCA of Spokane, Washington, and the Ministerial Alliance endorsed Dodd’s idea of holding a Father’s Day celebration in June. Father’s Day celebrations began in various places as her idea gained momentum across the country.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson traveled to Spokane, Washington, to join the Father’s Day celebration. In 1966, President Lyndon B Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June. But it wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance.
