Before we dive into recipes for Thanksgiving Food Gifts you can make ahead for the holiday, let’s get inspired by the season. I’m positive you already know this song, but here are the lyrics written originally as a poem and titled New England Boy’s Song.

The New England Boy’s Song

Over the river, and through the wood,
To grandfather’s house we go;
The horse knows the way,
To carry the sleigh,
Through the white and drifted snow.
Over the river, and through the wood,
To grandfather’s house away!
We would not stop
For doll or top,
For ‘t is Thanksgiving day.

~ Lydia Maria Child

Traveling to “grandfather’s house”  is nothing new, as this time-honored poem, first published in 1844, reminds us.

Long before 1844, a group of immigrants traveled more than 3,000 miles to a new land. Help from their native neighbors allowed them to survive almost unbearable hardships and forge a tradition still loved in this country.

As we prepare for Thanksgiving Day, let’s remember the first Thanksgiving gathering in 1621. It was a gathering unlike any other, and it is so remarkable that we continue in its tradition all these years later.

A group of 53 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans in Plymouth, Massachusetts, forever changed the way Americans celebrated the fourth Thursday each November.
