Ground Turkey Skillet

I love quick and easy weeknight dinner recipes you can whip up in one skillet, especially when the ground turkey (which can be on the mild side) is beautifully flavored with Mediterranean-inspired spices and ingredients.

This turkey skillet and rice is tender, flavorful, and so delicious with orzo and rice! The flavors remind me of my One Pan Caprese Pesto Chicken Orzo, cooked more quickly in a skillet.

There is something special about whipping out a skillet and cooking a delicious dinner—a little like my Mexican Lasagna Skillet Casserole, with equally simple execution and rich Southwestern flavors!

Ingredients for a ground turkey skillet recipe are arranged on a round wooden board and white table, featuring labeled bowls of spinach, chicken broth, rice, orzo, onion, sun dried tomatoes, garlic, lemon, and assorted dried herbs and spices.

Ground Turkey Recipe Key Ingredients

  • Ground turkey: I prefer lean ground turkey, but not ground turkey breast.
  • Onion + Garlic: Red onion gives it Mediterranean flavors, but use what you have on hand. The garlic adds a delicious flavor to the whole dish.
  • Orzo + Rice: This combination creates a delicious rice pilaf. If you prefer, you can increase the rice to 1.5 cups and eliminate the orzo.
  • Lemon: Adding lemon slices during the cooking process is easy, and that bright flavor permeates the rice and ground turkey.
  • Sun-dried tomatoes: This ingredient adds so much flavor. Look for ones packed in oil, drain them, and give them a rough chop.
  • Seasoning: You will need salt, ground black pepper, dried oregano, and dried basil.
  • Chicken Broth: Cooks the rice and orzo and keeps the ground turkey moist and tender.
  • Spinach: Baby spinach leaves are best, but if you’re using larger leaves, also give them a rough chop.
  • Toppings: Crumbled feta (or your favorite), red pepper flakes, and additional lemon wedges. I love to serve this in bowls with salad greens and Greek Yogurt Sauce.

How to Make Ground Turkey Skillet

This healthy ground turkey skillet cooks in just under 30 minutes. Here’s how I make this skillet recipe!

A ground turkey skillet with sliced red onions, spices, and olive oil sits on a white wooden surface, with a green cloth partially visible beside the pan.
A ground turkey skillet on a white wooden surface contains ground meat, white rice, shredded cheese, and sun-dried tomatoes arranged separately. A wooden spoon rests in the pan, with a green cloth draped nearby.

Brown the ground turkey, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, oregano, and basil until the meat is browned and the onion is translucent.

Then, mix in sun-dried tomatoes, rice, and orzo. Saute for 1-2 minutes, and then pour in the chicken broth, top with lemon slices, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for 15 minutes or until the rice and orzo are tender.

Finally, stir in spinach until it’s wilted.

Serve topped with feta cheese. For a subtle heat, sprinkle with crushed red pepper flakes.

How to Meal Prep

This easy turkey skillet dinner is perfect for meal prep. The leftovers reheat really well, and they should last in the fridge for up to 4 days. Just store in individual containers and microwave until warm.

Variations:

  • Switch the ground turkey for ground chicken or sirloin.
  • Use fresh halved cherry tomatoes instead of sun-dried tomatoes.
  • Add more toppings like chopped cucumbers or Greek olives.
