What I Love About Homemade Graham Crackers
These cookies, inspired by our favorite childhood snack and consumed with more smores than we can count, are a fun baking project for kids and adults alike. Simple to make with easy ingredients, these cookie “crackers” are delicious with healthier ingredients.
Ingredients Needed for Graham Crackers
You might be tempted to think that Graham Cracker ingredients will consist of hard to find items not stocked in your pantry. If so, I think you’ll be surprised. These crackers use 100% whole wheat flour and a handful of simple baking ingredients. Here’s what you need:
- Whole wheat flour
- Brown sugar
- Ground cinnamon
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Cooking oil (like vegetable oil)
- Milk (dairy or non-dairy)
- Honey
- Vanilla extract
How To Make Graham Crackers
The full recipe is in the recipe card below, but here is a quick idea of how easy it is to make these sweet crackers.
- Combine the flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and baking powder in a medium-sized bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk the oil, honey, and milk. Stir the wet ingredients into the flour mixture until the dough comes together and is smooth.
- Wrap and chill the dough for 1 hour or more.
- Preheat the oven to 350℉.
- Divide the dough in half. On a floured sheet of parchment, roll each portion into a thin rectangle. I like to roll the rectangle to about 12 inches x 7.5 inches. Trim the edges.
- Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough into about 2 x 5-inch rectangles. Score the middle with the back of a knife, both lengthwise and crosswise. Then, use a fork to prick the cracker in each section to resemble a classic Graham Cracker pattern.
- Carefully transfer the parchment paper to a sheet pan and bake for 10-12 minutes.
- Let cool on the sheet pan for a couple of minutes before gently separating the crackers into rectangles.
How to Shape Homemade Crackers
This is the fun part! It’s easy to make classic-looking graham crackers with equipment you likely already have on hand. All you need is a ruler, rolling pin, knife, and fork.
After rolling the dough into a rectangle, use the ruler to cut into even crackers. Then use the back of the knife to score each cracker down the middle both lengthwise and crosswise. To each of the 4 sections, use your fork to prick 3 sets of holes.
Then bake for 10-12 minutes, depending on the thickness of the crackers. And that’s it!

How Long Do Graham Crackers Last?
You can store these homemade Graham crackers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. For longer storage, you can freeze the dough and bake it later or freeze the baked crackers for up to several months!
Origins of Graham Crackers

Have you ever wondered how Graham Crackers got their name? If you’re like me, you may have assumed they were named after graham flour, a whole grain flour much like whole wheat.
And you would be right—which brings us to the origins. Graham flour is named after Presbyterian minister Sylvester Graham, who is also known for his leadership in the temperance movement and staunch belief in eating healthy whole grains. This belief inspired others to create Graham flour and market products using it.
Early Graham crackers were made using Graham flour, oil, molasses, and salt. In 1898, Graham crackers went into mass production. According to Statista, about 267.03 million consumers in the U.S. will consume these and similar crackers in 2024.

- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3/4 teaspoon salt

- 3 tablespoons milk dairy or non-dairy

Instructions
- Combine the flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and baking powder in a medium-sized bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk the oil, honey, and milk. Stir the wet ingredients into the flour mixture until the dough comes together, adding more milk if necessary. Mix until smooth.
- Wrap the dough and chill until firm, about 1 hour or longer if needed. The dough is soft so you will need it to stiffen up in the refrigerator.
- Preheat the oven to 350℉ and line two baking sheets with parchment.
- Divide the dough in half. On a floured sheet of parchment, roll each portion out thinly, about 1/8 inch thick. I like to roll until the long side of the rectangle is about 12 inches by about 7.5 inches. With a pizza cutter, trim the edges (you can use these later to form cookies with the scrap dough).
- Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough into about 2 x 5-inch rectangles. Score the middle with the back of a knife, both lengthwise and crosswise. Then, use a fork to prick the cracker in each section to resemble a classic Graham Cracker pattern.
- Carefully transfer the parchment paper to a sheet pan and bake for 10-12 minutes.
- Let cool on the sheet pan for a couple of minutes before gently separating the crackers into rectangles.
