There is something special about a cake (or a brownie) that you can prep in one minute and bake in one more minute, and have delicious cake almost instantly. Just like our most popular Carrot Cake in a Mug recipe or a close second, the Gingerbread Mug Cake.

Brownie in a Mug
If there ever was a Friday dessert, a movie dessert, or a summer dessert (except maybe s’mores), brownies would check all of those boxes. And with most brownie discussions will come the inevitable debate of fudgy brownies vs. cakey brownies. If you like both, see my Fudgy Cakey Family Size Brownies Recipe.
This brownie recipe is more fudgy than cakey but still light, chocolaty, and delicious. I hope you love it as much as we do!
Brownie Mug Cake Ingredients:
- All-purpose flour
- Unsweetened cocoa powder
- Granulated sugar (white sugar)
- Salt
- Cooking oil (your favorite)
- Milk: Any milk you prefer works here
- Vanilla extract
- Chocolate chips: I’m using dark chocolate
How to Make Brownie in a Mug in 3 Easy Steps:
- Add the dry ingredients to a bowl or microwave-safe mug: flour, cocoa, sugar, and salt.
- Stir in the wet ingredients: cooking oil, milk, and vanilla. Add chocolate chips.
- Microwave for 60-90 seconds.
Pro Tips
- Be sure to measure flour correctly and avoid adding too much flour. This will result in a less fudgy brownie.
- A shorter, wider mug is perfect for mug cakes, allowing more even cooking. I’m using a 9-ounce ceramic mug.
- Avoid overcooking, as the brownie mug cake will become dry. The center will continue to set as it cools slightly before serving. You want the top to be set with a few shiny spots. Begin at 1 minute and if needed, microwave in additional 10-second intervals.
- Do not over-mix the batter, as it will lead to a tough brownie.
Serving ideas:
- Small scoop of vanilla ice cream
- Chopped nuts (I love pecans, but any are delicious)
- Drizzle of chocolate sauce
- Chocolate chips
Can you make mug cakes dairy free?
Absolutely! For a dairy-free mug cake, you can substitute almond or soy milk instead of dairy milk.

Brownie in a Mug Recipe
Equipment
- 9-ounce mug (this is link to the mug I'm using in the post)
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 ½ tablespoons granulated sugar
- dash salt
- 3 tablespoons milk
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 tablespoons chocolate chips plus more for the top
Instructions
- Stir the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt in a small bowl until combined. Add the milk, oil, and vanilla. Give it a few stirs with a fork or whisk, and then add the chocolate chip, stir or whisk until completely combined. Transfer batter to a 10-12 ounce microwave-safe mug and top with additional chocolate chips.
- Microwave on high for 1 minute. The brownie will have risen but should still have some moist spots on the top. If the batter looks uncooked, microwave in 10-second intervals until done. Let it cool in the mug for a few minutes before serving with vailla ice cream or whipped cream.
