I love this Chocolate Chip Banana Mug Cake! Imagine a warm cake filled with banana chocolaty goodness can be yours in 2 minutes. Maybe even less if your microwave is more powerful than mine.

For those of us who believe banana bread and banana cake should occupy a portion of every cookbook, this is a mug cake recipe you’ll want to add to that recipe card file. While banana bread, or banana cake is outstandingly delicious, they take almost an hour to bake… on a good day!

This Banana Mug Cake takes 2 minutes to microwave and only requires a handful of ingredients. It’s a long title, I know. But this mug cake deserves it.

Can I make more than one mug cake at once?

To make 1 mug cake, I mix the ingredients in the mug itself. If I’m making more than one, I double or triple the recipe and mix it in a separate bowl before pouring it into the mugs.

Does it matter what kind of mug I use?

Just use your favorite—everyone’s mugs are different, and you’ll know after you’ve made your first mug cake if you should use a bigger mug next time or perhaps a smaller one (though a bigger mug means there is more room for toppings!).

Anything you like on Chocolate Chip Banana Bread works great here too. Whipped cream, dusted with ground cinnamon is delicious. Or sliced bananas, a drizzle of chocolate… melty ice cream? How amazing would this No Churn Blueberry Mascarpone Ice Cream scooped on top be?

I’m getting hungry!

So grab the remote and cue up the movie. It’s time for a treat!

  1. Had a very brown, mushy banana I was determined to use instead of discarding. This dessert was the solution. Super easy and tasty. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi Michelle, you have to love those brown bananas! I’m so glad you found the mug cake and enjoyed it! It’s definitely a great option for single brown bananas. I too have one on my counter today– I think this mug cake is on the menu!

  2. Will it work if you replace butter with oil? I feel like every time I put butter into a mug cake it ends up overflowing and making a mess in my microwave, which is what happened now too, I even used my biggest mug…

    1. I’m sorry! I hate it when the microwave gets messed up. You can definitely swap the butter for oil. It does affect the flavor but hopefully will work better with your microwave. I’ve not had that happen with butter but I’m often using 14 and even 16 ounce mugs!

    2. I was hungry for a treat and found this recipe. I used the oil in a 10 oz mug and it came out great, no mess. Although I did miss the flavor of the butter.

  3. I stumbled on this recipe and I had a ripe banana on hand so I decided to try it. Wow. It’s so light and fluffy!! Absolutely hit the spot for a quick desert.

    1. Hi Jen, I’m happy you had that ripe banana on hand 😍. Thank you for trying the recipe— I’m so glad you liked it!

  4. Oh my goodness… I x4 the recipe and cooked it in a microwave ring tray for 5 mins and it was delicious with a dollop of whipped cream! Thank you I will be making this again!

  5. I don’t have much time to eat anything because of online school, but this is so quick and delicious! Personally, I think three tablespoons of sugar is too sweet, so I reduced it to 1 1/2 tablespoons. Thank you for this recipe!!!

    1. Thank you for your comment on the sugar. I also like a reduced amount but the guys in our house love it sweeter. I’m SO glad you liked it and that it works for a super busy schedule!

    1. That is a great question. I’ve not tested it with water. Milk adds a creamy flavor to the cake – but water should work. I will try to test it this evening!

      1. Jana — I made 4 mugs cakes last night with water — and there is very little difference. Enjoy!!

  6. We tried the 2 minute chocolate chip banana mug cake tonight. It was so easy, quick and delicious. Thank you for a wonderful desert recipe and treat for a Sunday night.
