But first, let’s get in the mood for all things Irish!
Why Do We Celebrate St Patrick’s Day?
This day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It also celebrates the Irish heritage and culture which so many of us can trace our roots to (myself included). Celebrations vary but often include parades, festivals, parades and festivals, céilithe, and the wearing of green!
Why Do We Wear Green on St Patrick’s Day?
Did you know the original color associated with St. Patrick’s Day was blue?
True. It wasn’t until the 18th century that green became the “color” of St. Patrick’s Day coinciding with the shamrock becoming the national symbol.
But green also represents the lush green grassy hills of Ireland, also known as the Emerald Isle.
And then… there are the Leprechauns. Which is often the real reason people wear green on St. Patrick’s Day! The folk tradition believed that wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns. And associated pinching that comes if you’re not wearing green.
